One of the reasons we love wood flowers so much is that they are eco-friendly! If you'd like to read our blog post on what wood flowers are made of and how wood flowers are made, check out that blog post here! This is some further information about our opinions on the eco-friendly and sustainable benefits of the material we work with:
-
Sustainable Material: Wood flowers are made from the bark of the sola plant, which is a renewable resource. The sola plant is a type of tropical vine that grows abundantly in countries like India, Thailand, and Vietnam. Harvesting the bark of the plant doesn't harm the plant itself, making it a sustainable material choice that can be harvested and farmed again and again.
-
Reduced Carbon Footprint: Unlike fresh cut flowers, wood flowers do not require extensive transportation or refrigeration to maintain their freshness. Fresh flowers are often flown in from different countries, consuming significant amounts of energy and generating carbon emissions. Wood flowers, on the other hand, can be produced locally or in countries closer to the market, minimizing transportation-related environmental impact. Check out this AMAZING article from the Silk Stem Collective talking about the carbon footprint of sola wood flowers. They did a great job!
-
Longer Lifespan: Fresh flowers have a short lifespan and typically last only a few days to a couple of weeks. In contrast, wood flowers are long-lasting and can be enjoyed for years. This reduces the need for frequent replacements and minimizes waste, which we especially love!
-
Chemical-Free: Wood flowers are free from pesticides and other harmful chemicals that are commonly used in the cultivation of fresh flowers. The production of wood flowers does not involve the use of synthetic fertilizers or pesticides, making them a healthier and more environmentally friendly alternative. When we import pre-made wood flowers, they do go through a fumigation process upon entering the USA. This is something we will look into further. If you have any questions regarding this, let us know in the comments below!
-
Waste Reduction: Wood flowers contribute to waste reduction by reducing the demand for fresh cut flowers that are discarded after a short period. By choosing wood flowers, you can help reduce the amount of flower waste that ends up in landfills. Because fresh flowers are biodegradable, the waste is compostable, but often times the chemicals used to dye or preserve the florals are not. Our flowers are biodegradable as well.
-
Water Conservation: The production of fresh cut flowers requires substantial amounts of water for irrigation. Wood flowers eliminate the need for water-intensive cultivation practices, helping to conserve this valuable resource. This is a huge reason why wood flowers can be a phenomenal replacement for fresh florals!
-
Upcycling Potential: Wood flowers can be repurposed and upcycled in various creative ways. They can be used in home décor, bouquets, wreaths, and other crafts. By reusing wood flowers, you can extend their life cycle and minimize waste.
Overall, wood flowers offer an environmentally friendly alternative to fresh cut flowers, promoting sustainability, waste reduction, and conservation of natural resources. As we learn more about our footprint and emissions as a small business, we will continue to grow towards an environmentally conscious business. This may include the incorporation of more natural resources and less faux greens, glues and choosing eco-friendly paints and dyes.
